While that might not seem great at first, if you can dump a few burn spells into your opponents face between those phases and empty your hand, you wont have to discard anything
Flavour wise it is still a total winner, little in magic compares to the feeling of impending doom you have as you repeatedly chump block the ever growing Spirit Monger just waiting for the time it is big enough to one shot you and your blockers get removed
