As the frontman of the New York Dolls, David Johansen was a crucial bridge between the glam excess of the early 1970s and the punk explosion that followed at CBGB and Max's Kansas City. The Dolls' raw, cross dressing theatricality influenced a generation of downtown bands even as the group itself burned out fast. Grossman caught Johansen in the easy, off stage intimacy that
