A permanent is removed from combat if it leaves the battlefield, if its controller changes , if it phases out, if an effect specifically removes it from combat, if it's a planeswalker that's being attacked and stops being a planeswalker, or if it's an attacking or blocking creature that regenerates (see rule 701.12) or stops being a creature
While these combo pieces cost more mana than Curiosity and essentially do the same thing, including them greatly increases your chances of drawing your win condition
Card sets based around Baldurs Gate , and even the Final Fantasy games, dont look that out of place unless you know the specific references theyre making: Weird creatures, guys and gals with swords, etc
Sometimes restraint is the smart play, and sometimes it's worth pouring every drop of mana you have just to see what happens when you cut loose
